The Van Wert City Board of Education gave official approval to rebidding the general trades portion of the new elementary school construction project during a special meeting Monday morning. This time, though, the board reduced the scope of the project to better ensure that bids have a better chance to falling within an acceptable range.<\/p>\n

The board was unanimous in approving a resolution to reject the original general trades bid for the grades 1-5 elementary building and authorize the rebidding of that portion of the project. The rebidding includes more than $2.5 million in project deletions made by Richard L. Bowen & Associates Inc., the district\u2019s construction manager. Project deletions include:<\/p>\n

  • Deleting concrete on playgrounds ($75,000 savings)<\/li>\n
  • Deleting sidewalk bike paths ($78,675 savings)<\/li>\n
  • Deleting soil stabilization ($200,000 savings)<\/li>\n
  • Deleting canopies over entrances ($400,064 savings)<\/li>\n
  • Deleting low walls and wings ($32,000 savings)<\/li>\n
  • Deleting playground equipment ($59,000 savings)<\/li>\n
  • Deleting playground fencing ($26,157 savings)<\/li>\n
  • Deleting landscaping ($29,298 savings)<\/li>\n
  • Deleting sod ($17,055 savings)<\/li>\n
  • Deleting metal roofing ($157,357 savings)<\/li>\n
  • Deleting student dining skylights ($80,000 savings)<\/li>\n
  • Deleting operable gym wall ($111,847 savings)<\/li>\n
  • Deleting volleyball equipment ($9,496 savings)<\/li>\n
  • Delete kiln ($2,374 savings)<\/li>\n
  • Delete terrazzo floor tile ($335,000 savings)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    With the bid savings from the fire suppression, plumbing, and HVAC bid packages ($536,608) and a site safety allowance of $150,000 and $200,000 moved from the technology budget, that brings savings from the above items to just under $2.5 million.<\/p>\n

    Another $154,050 will be saved by going to analog clocks, versus digital ones and deleting lightning protection, some security access controls and security cameras and the interactive student response system.<\/p>\n

    It is hoped those savings will be enough to allow the general trades bids to come in within the acceptable range. The lowest of the rejected bids was $2,938,667 over the estimate of $9,334,833.<\/p>\n

    Superintendent Ken Amstutz said deleting some of the security equipment would not lessen the safety of students and staff in the new building, since significantly more security was built into the building than was needed.<\/p>\n

    With more than $1 million in contingency money, Amstutz said he felt many of the items being deleted now have a good chance of being added back in later.<\/p>\n

    The new bids sought will be opened at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 19.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
