In addition to being a fire hazard, it can be a source of toxic fumes.<\/p>\nPower outages are also common during cold and snowy conditions.\u00a0If the power goes out, make sure that all electrical appliances, such as stoves, electric space heaters and hair dryers, are in the \u201coff\u201d position.\u00a0Generator use may also occur in the event of an outage.\u00a0Remember to only use a generator or other fuel-powered machines outside the home.\u00a0Carbon monoxide fumes are odorless and can quickly overwhelm people indoors.\u00a0Also, never connect generators to another power source, such as power lines. The reverse flow of electricity or \u201cbackfeed\u201d can electrocute an unsuspecting utility worker. Also, never run cords under rugs or carpets where heat might build up or damage to a cord may go unnoticed.<\/p>\n
Finally, check smoke alarms to make sure they are in proper working order.\u00a0They should be installed on every level of a home and inside and outside of sleeping areas.\u00a0Also practice a family fire escape plan with all family members and any guests.<\/p>\n
