Although it could have been worse, Van Wert County schools are closed for the day, while residents dig out this morning from a storm that dumped approximately 7.5 inches of snow on the county<\/p>\n

According to County Emergency Management Director Rick McCoy, a change in the track of the storm, which veered more northward than expected, saved the county from the 10-12 inches of snow forecasters were predicting for the area.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank goodness this storm moved slightly to the north,\u201d McCoy noted in his Facebook blog.<\/p>\n

Not so lucky were a number of northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio communities and counties, including LaPorte (19.3 inches), Elkhart (16.3 inches), Shipshewana (16.0 inches), and Fort Wayne (12.0 inches) in Indiana, and Wauseon (14.3 inches), Williams County (11.0 inches) and Antwerp (10.6 inches) in Ohio.<\/p>\n

Winds also increased overnight in the county, causing blowing and drifting, especially in rural areas.<\/p>\n

The high today is expected to be 14, with a wind-chill factor of minus 5 below zero. Tuesday should be partly cloudy, with a high of 30 and a low of 24, while morning snow showers are forecast for Wednesday, with a high of 31 degrees and a low of 9.<\/p>\n

Thursday should be bitterly cold, with a high of 11 and a low of minus 3 degrees.<\/p>\n

In addition to closing schools, other agencies and organizations, such as churches, etc., could postpone, cancel or delay activities.<\/p>\n

As of this morning, the only announced closing is the Van Wert County WIC (Women, Infants, Children) office, which is closed today because of the weekend snowstorm.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
