{"id":60431,"date":"2015-02-03T22:58:34","date_gmt":"2015-02-04T03:58:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=60431"},"modified":"2015-02-03T22:58:34","modified_gmt":"2015-02-04T03:58:34","slug":"richard-david-matthews","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2015\/02\/03\/richard-david-matthews\/","title":{"rendered":"Richard David Matthews"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Richard David \u201cPastor Matt\u201d Matthews, 81, of Madison, Wisconsin, passed away on Wednesday, January 28, 2015, at St. Mary\u2019s Care Center in Madison.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60432\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60432\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Richard-Matthews-obit-photo-2-2015.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-60432 \" style=\"border: 1px solid black;\" alt=\"Richard David Matthews\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Richard-Matthews-obit-photo-2-2015.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"210\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-60432\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Richard David Matthews<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He was born May 16, 1933, in Van Wert, the son of Dale and Evelyn (Riley) Matthews, who both preceded him in death.<\/p>\n<p>He served in the United States Air Force as an air traffic controller during the Korean Conflict. He attended Moody <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/American-Flag-for-obituaries-6-2011.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-8711\" style=\"border: 1px solid black;\" alt=\"American Flag for obituaries 6-2011\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/American-Flag-for-obituaries-6-2011.jpg\" width=\"125\" height=\"66\" \/><\/a>Bible Institute and was awarded a doctorate in theology by the Clarksville School of Theology.<\/p>\n<p>Richard was united in marriage to Marie (Manera) Matthews, who survives in Madison. He served as an ordained minister for 54 years, including work as a missionary, family counselor and Christian radio broadcaster and former pastor of Memorial Baptist Church. Richard was an amateur radio operator, hunter and outdoor enthusiast. He was also a commercial pilot and flight instructor.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to his wife, survivors include his children, Evi, David, Tom and John Matthews; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister, Virginia Hammons.<\/p>\n<p>Two brothers, Robert and Eugene Matthews, also preceded him in death.<\/p>\n<p><b>A memorial service was conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, February 2, at Memorial Baptist Church in Verona, Wisconsin.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Preferred memorials: Mission Outreach Society, to defer final ministry expenses.<\/p>\n<p>The family would like to thank the staffs at St. Mary\u2019s Care Center and the Veterans Administration hospital for their loving care of Pastor Matt.<\/p>\n<p>To view and sign the online guestbook, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ryanfuneralservice.com\">www.ryanfuneralservice.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Richard David \u201cPastor Matt\u201d Matthews, 81, of Madison, Wisconsin, passed away on Wednesday, January 28, 2015, at St. Mary\u2019s Care Center in Madison.
