DEFIANCE — The Van Wert Cougars were outclassed by a tall and talented Defiance team, losing 64-39 in a Western Buckeye League boys\u2019 basketball match-up on Friday night.<\/p>\n

The Bulldogs got out to a 16-9 first-quarter lead and never trailed after that. Defiance led by 15 points, 38-23, at the half, and was up by 17 points, 49-32, at the three-quarter mark.<\/p>\n

The Bulldogs had four players in double figures, led by Katwan Singleton\u2019s 16 points. Singleton\u2019s brother, Kameron, added 13 points, while Wes Detter and Shay Smiddy both scored 11 points in the contest.<\/p>\n

Van Wert had just one player in double figures as Nick Keber scored 13 points for the Cougars. Top scorer Connor Holliday was held to 4 points in the contest, while Colin Smith had 9 points and Jacoby Kelly added 8 points for Van Wert.<\/p>\n

With the win, Defiance is now 17-1 and 6-1 in the WBL, while the Cougars fall to 6-12 overall and 2-5 in league play.<\/p>\n

Van Wert was 14 of 39 from the field (35.9 percent), but made half of its 10 three-point attempts. The Bulldogs made 25 of 42 field goal attempts (59.5 percent), including 9 of 20 from three-point range (45 percent).<\/p>\n

Both teams shot well from the free-throw line, with Van Wert making 6 of 7 (85.7 percent), and the Bulldogs 6 of 8 from the line (75 percent).<\/p>\n

Defiance outrebounded the Cougars, 15-12, while Van Wert had seven more turnovers, 16-9, with nine of those coming in the fourth quarter.<\/p>\n

The Cougar junior varsity team won by a point, edging Defiance\u2019s JVs 38-37. Davis Munroe was Van Wert\u2019s top scorer with 13 points, while Nick Gutierrez added 11 points. Austin Ehlinger scored 14 points for the Bulldogs.<\/p>\n

The Cougars will go on the road again tonight, traveling to St. Henry for a game with the Redskins.<\/p>\n

In Convoy, the Crestview Knights made 11 of 19 three-point shots to down Allen East 62-50 in a Northwest Conference boys\u2019 basketball game.<\/p>\n

With the win, the Knights are now 11-6 overall and 4-1 in the NWC, while the Mustangs fall to 6-12 and 2-4.<\/p>\n

Connor Lautzenheiser led the Knights with 23 points, while Mitchell Rickard added 17 points and Cody Mefferd scored 16 for Crestview. Luke Perkins was Allen East\u2019s top scorer, with 16 points, while Logan Ryan added 11 for the Mustangs.<\/p>\n

The Lincolnview Lancers downed the Ada Bulldogs 60-43 in a NWC boys\u2019 basketball contest played at Ada. The Lancers are now 12-8 overall and 2-4 in the NWC, while Ada falls to 8-10 and 3-3.<\/p>\n

Chandler Adams led Lincolnview with 18 points, while Justis Dowdy added 13 points for the Lancers. Blake Willeke was the Bulldogs\u2019 top scorer, with 17 points in the game, while Grant McBride added 11 points for Ada.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
