{"id":62936,"date":"2015-04-17T07:06:41","date_gmt":"2015-04-17T12:06:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=62936"},"modified":"2015-04-17T07:06:41","modified_gmt":"2015-04-17T12:06:41","slug":"odot-seeking-volunteers-to-adopt-roads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2015\/04\/17\/odot-seeking-volunteers-to-adopt-roads\/","title":{"rendered":"ODOT seeking volunteers to adopt roads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>Ohio Dept. of Transportation information<\/i><\/p>\n<p>COLUMBUS<b> <\/b><i>&#8212;<\/i><b> <\/b>Each year, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is forced to spend $4 million on litter pickup &#8212; a persistent and preventable problem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only is litter expensive, but it takes us away from more important roadwork,\u201d said ODOT Director Jerry Wray.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/ODOT-logo.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-645\" alt=\"ODOT logo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/ODOT-logo.gif\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>Statewide last year, ODOT spent $4 million picking up 42,572 bags of trash. That money could be used to purchase 28 new snowplow trucks, pave a 28-mile two-lane road, or install 160 culverts.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, ODOT does get aid from local volunteers, including its more than 1,400 Adopt-A-Highway groups.<\/p>\n<p>ODOT\u2019s Adopt-A-Highway groups \u2013 at least one in each of Ohio\u2019s 88 counties &#8212; clean a two-mile section, or interchange, a minimum of four times a year for two years.
