{"id":63156,"date":"2015-04-23T23:25:59","date_gmt":"2015-04-24T04:25:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=63156"},"modified":"2015-04-23T23:28:49","modified_gmt":"2015-04-24T04:28:49","slug":"ohio-legislators-ok-hites-meningitis-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2015\/04\/23\/ohio-legislators-ok-hites-meningitis-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"Ohio legislators OK Hite&#8217;s meningitis bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>Ohio Statehouse information<\/i><\/p>\n<p>COLUMBUS &#8212; State Senator Cliff Hite (R-Findlay) announced the passage of legislation this week that requires students to be immunized against meningitis.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_63157\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-63157\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/State-Senator-Cliff-Hite-4-2015.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-63157  \" style=\"border: 1px solid black;\" alt=\"State Senator Cliff Hite\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/State-Senator-Cliff-Hite-4-2015.jpg\" width=\"160\" height=\"262\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-63157\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>State Senator Cliff Hite<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThis bill is about protecting Ohio\u2019s children and families from preventable tragedies, and I am proud to honor not only my niece, but all those who have suffered from Meningitis,\u201d said Hite. \u201cIf we can prevent even one death with the passage of this bill, we will have made a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meningitis can quickly strike young victims causing severe health risks or even death within hours.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the Ohio Senate honored the memory of Senator Hite\u2019s niece, Tess, by marking March 9 as \u201cMeningitis Awareness Day.\u201d Tess passed away within hours of contracting meningitis. Senate Bill 121 aligns with current law on immunizations and places meningitis on the list of diseases our students are vaccinated against in order to prevent such tragedies.<\/p>\n<p>Senate Bill 121 works in conjunction with the Ohio Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Immunization Advocacy Network of Ohio to require students of ages recommended by the Ohio Department of Health to be immunized against meningococcal disease. This would first take place for the 2016-17 school year.<\/p>\n<p>The bill recommends vaccinating against meningitis at ages 11-12, with a booster at 16.
