{"id":638,"date":"2010-12-31T14:25:46","date_gmt":"2010-12-31T21:25:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=638"},"modified":"2010-12-31T14:33:03","modified_gmt":"2010-12-31T21:33:03","slug":"odot-drive-safely-on-new-years-eve","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2010\/12\/31\/odot-drive-safely-on-new-years-eve\/","title":{"rendered":"ODOT: Drive safely on New Year&#8217;s Eve"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Van Wert independent\/<\/strong><em>ODOT information<\/em><\/p>\n<p>COLUMBUS<em> <\/em>\u2013<strong> <\/strong>On this New Year\u2019s Eve \u2013 as Ohioans look forward to 2011 \u2013 Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) safety experts ask motorists to look ahead while driving to avoid rear-end collisions, the leading cause of crashes in Ohio.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-645\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/?attachment_id=645\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-645\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/ODOT-logo.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>According to the ODOT safety analysis of the first nine months of this year, there have been 237,374 crashes on Ohio roadways \u2013 with nearly one out of four crashes caused by motorists following too close. \u2028\u2028Although safety has improved on Ohio\u2019s roadways \u2013 with 2009 being the safest year on record \u2013 ODOT safety experts say the number of crashes in Ohio can continue to be reduced by changing driver behavior. As motorists look ahead in 2011, ODOT safety experts recommend these tips to help prevent crashes:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Back Off \u2013 <\/strong>Ohio law states motorists should leave one car length between their car and the car in front of them for every 10 mph of speed. Trucks should allow even more space.<\/p>\n<p><strong>See the Light <\/strong>\u2013 If there is a need to turn on windshield wipers, turn on headlights as well. Ohio law now requires drivers to turn on vehicles\u2019 headlights whenever windshield wipers are in operation due to any type of precipitation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Look Up, Hang Up \u2013 <\/strong>Be aware of one\u2019s surroundings and avoid distractions, such as cell phones. Watch for construction zones, snowplow trucks, and pedestrians.
