This violation, known as following too close or failing to maintain an assured clear distance ahead (ACDA), was the most frequent cause of crashes overall in Ohio in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>In total, 67,886 crashes on Ohio roadways occurred when the at-fault driver was following too closely, resulting in 62 deaths and 27,294 injuries.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/osplogo.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2340\" alt=\"osplogo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/osplogo.gif\" width=\"121\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a>Troopers wrote 11,926 citations that included an ACDA violation last year, primarily between the afternoon rush hours of 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Motorists who are driving 65 mph have traveled nearly the length of a football field in just three seconds. If the vehicle in front of them slams on the brakes and there isn\u2019t enough distance between cars, there\u2019s no way to stop before it is too late.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTraffic can be frustrating, but that\u2019s no excuse to endanger yourself and other drivers,\u201d said Lt. Tim Grigsby, Van Wert post commander. \u201cIt\u2019s always best for all motorists to maintain a safe following distance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Remember, following too closely diminishes motorists\u2019 view of the big picture, meaning they are unable to see what is going on further down the roadway.
