{"id":65119,"date":"2015-06-20T06:51:59","date_gmt":"2015-06-20T11:51:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=65119"},"modified":"2015-06-20T06:51:59","modified_gmt":"2015-06-20T11:51:59","slug":"odot-dont-move-high-water-barricades","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2015\/06\/20\/odot-dont-move-high-water-barricades\/","title":{"rendered":"ODOT: Don&#8217;t move high-water barricades"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>Ohio Dept. of Transportation information<\/i><\/p>\n<p>LIMA &#8212; The area is still dealing with high water that closed several area highways this week, including Interstate 75 in Allen County.<\/p>\n<p>Now, as Tropical Depression Bill approaches this weekend, the Ohio Department of Transportation and local law enforcement are issuing a warning: do not move or drive around barricades placed on highways.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have seen several instances of motorists moving barricades in order to drive around them,\u201d said ODOT District 1 Deputy Director Kirk Slusher. \u201cWhat they may not realize is the barricade is the law and those who drive upon a closed road are subject to arrest or fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/ODOT-logo.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-645\" alt=\"ODOT logo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/ODOT-logo.gif\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>ODOT officials have observed barricades being moved and then left out of place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDrivers may interpret a displaced barricade as an indication that the roadway is opened which creates a dangerous scenario where motorists could unknowingly drive into high water,\u201d said Slusher.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, highways that no longer have water across them, but remain barricaded, are closed for good reason. Highways often remain closed where water has reached the bottom of a bridge structure. A licensed engineer inspects each structure where this occurs before the roadway is reopened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can take days to complete these inspections depending on the number of structures involved,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>With the anticipated rainfall and subsequent road closures that are expected this weekend, ODOT and law enforcement are planning to coordinate their efforts to ensure public safety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s more than one way to reach a destination,\u201d Slusher added. \u201cMake sure you choose the safe and lawful way.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ohio Dept. of Transportation information LIMA &#8212; The area is still dealing with high water that closed several area highways this week, including Interstate 75 in Allen County.
