{"id":66918,"date":"2015-08-14T07:42:05","date_gmt":"2015-08-14T12:42:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=66918"},"modified":"2015-08-14T07:42:05","modified_gmt":"2015-08-14T12:42:05","slug":"vwhs-robotics-team-at-space-museum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2015\/08\/14\/vwhs-robotics-team-at-space-museum\/","title":{"rendered":"VWHS robotics team at space museum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>Van Wert independent\/submitted information<\/i><\/p>\n<p>WAPAKONETA &#8212; The Van Wert High School Robotics team spent the mornings of June 11 and August 11 at the Air and Space Museum in Wapakoneta, doing a hands-on Robotics lab with 60 students in grades 2-8.<\/p>\n<p>Robotics Coach Zane McElroy, a Wapakoneta native and current VWMS Gateway to Technology teacher, was contacted by Christopher Moynihan, museum program director, and Emily Green, museum education director, to see if the team would be interested in helping out with the museum&#8217;s summer STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)\u00a0camp. (photo submitted)\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Robotics-team-at-camp-8-2015.jpg\" width=\"350\" height=\"280\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-66919\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Van Wert senior Jacob Covey works with youngsters at a recent robotics lab presented by the VWHS robotics team at the Air and Space Museum in Wapakoneta, while Coach Bob Spath looks on.<\/strong> <em>(photo submitted)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;Anytime we can have our high school robotics team members interact with younger kids regarding STEM and robotics is a positive thing for everyone participating,\u201d said Robotics Coach Bob Spath.\u00a0\u201cThe camp kids were really into the different robots we brought over, with the highlight being every camp kid was able to drive our competition robot.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Several Mercer and Auglaize County educators met with McElroy and Spath over the summer to discuss how best they can get an engineering program and robotics team in their own schools.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We had nearly 20 teachers, principals and superintendents meet with us in June at the request of Jared Ebbing, Mercer County economic developer, and Rod Moorman, Mercer\/Auglaize County Career Pathways coordinator,\u201d Spath noted.<\/p>\n<p>Businesses and companies are looking to fill jobs in STEM-related fields that require either a two-year or four-year engineering technology or engineering type degree.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVan Wert\u00a0City Schools\u00a0is leading the way in northwest Ohio with STEM programming, beginning in the elementary and continuing through the middle school and high school,\u201d Spath said.\u00a0\u201cSurrounding schools and counties have taken notice and are following our lead.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Van Wert independent\/submitted information WAPAKONETA &#8212; The Van Wert High School Robotics team spent the mornings of June 11 and August 11 at the Air and Space Museum in Wapakoneta, doing a hands-on Robotics lab with 60 students in grades 2-8.
