Williams. \u201cA get-rich-quick promise is a common sign of investment fraud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said investors nearing retirement are particularly at risk of being targeted by phony investment schemes promising high returns to make up for losses in retirement accounts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Seal-of-the-Ohio-Dept.-of-Commerce-8-2015.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-67344\" alt=\"Seal of the Ohio Dept. of Commerce 8-2015\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Seal-of-the-Ohio-Dept.-of-Commerce-8-2015.jpg\" width=\"160\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Seal-of-the-Ohio-Dept.-of-Commerce-8-2015.jpg 200w, https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Seal-of-the-Ohio-Dept.-of-Commerce-8-2015-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 160px) 100vw, 160px\" \/><\/a>\u201cWhether the markets are up or down, there are always those who will attempt to prey on the investing public,\u201d Director Williams said. \u201cInvestors should be on guard against high-pressure sales tactics for unregistered securities and non-traditional investments such as foreign currency, oil and gas investments, or offers to send their money offshore to so-called \u2018safe havens\u2019 to protect against a downturn in the market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Securities Commissioner Andrea Seidt encourages investors to hang up on aggressive cold callers and delete unsolicited e-mails promoting investment opportunities.\u00a0 She said legitimate financial professionals generally do not recommend changes to investment portfolios based on short-term economic news and market volatility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInvestors should view with great skepticism any recommendation to liquidate a well-structured, diversified investment portfolio to purchase an alternative investment product that may expose them to high commissions, high fees and undue risk,\u201d Seidt said.<\/p>\n<p>Before making an investment decision, investors are urged to call the Division\u2019s Investor\u00a0Protection Hotline at 800.788.1194 to ask:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is the brokerage firm and salesperson licensed to sell securities in Ohio?<\/li>\n<li>Have any enforcement actions been taken against them?<\/li>\n<li>Has the investment been properly registered with the Division of Securities?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>She also said investors should request from the salesperson all written information about any investment and carefully review it or ask a trusted third party to evaluate it.<\/p>\n<p>To assist investors, the Division of Securities has a variety of investor education publications at<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.com.ohio.gov\/secu\/\">www.com.ohio.gov\/secu\/<\/a>.
