{"id":67617,"date":"2015-09-04T07:15:20","date_gmt":"2015-09-04T12:15:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=67617"},"modified":"2015-09-04T07:15:20","modified_gmt":"2015-09-04T12:15:20","slug":"odot-reminds-motorists-to-drive-sober","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2015\/09\/04\/odot-reminds-motorists-to-drive-sober\/","title":{"rendered":"ODOT reminds motorists to drive sober"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>Ohio Dept. of Transportation information<\/i><\/p>\n<p>COLUMBUS<b> &#8212; <\/b>The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is reminding motorists to \u201cDrive Sober or Get Pulled Over\u201d this Labor Day weekend.<\/p>\n<p>ODOT, along with the Ohio Department of Public Safety, is participating in the \u2018Drive Sober\u2019 campaign to reduce alcohol-related crashes, injuries and deaths.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChanging dangerous behaviors, like impaired driving, will undoubtedly save lives,\u201d said ODOT Director Jerry Wray.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/ODOT-logo-500px-7-2015.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-65705\" alt=\"ODOT Logo (.jpg)\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/ODOT-logo-500px-7-2015.jpg\" width=\"147\" height=\"147\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/ODOT-logo-500px-7-2015.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/ODOT-logo-500px-7-2015-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 147px) 100vw, 147px\" \/><\/a>During the 2014 Labor Day weekend, there were 12 fatalities on Ohio\u2019s highways, including seven that were alcohol-related. There were 176 alcohol-related crashes resulting in 107 injuries.<\/p>\n<p>Alcohol-impaired fatalities accounted for 31 percent of all motor vehicle traffic fatalities in the United States in 2013. Of the 10,076 people who died in drunk driving crashes that year, 68 percent were in crashes in which at least one driver in the crash had a blood alcohol content of .15 or higher \u2013 nearly twice the legal limit.<\/p>\n<p>ODOT will post \u2018Drive Sober\u2019 messages on freeway signs over the holiday weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, Ohio has recorded 730 traffic deaths this year, up 19 percent from the same period last year.<\/p>\n<p>Although work is suspended in most construction zones over the holiday weekend, motorists should plan alternate routes or allow additional travel time to avoid work zone congestion, delays or more serious highway incidents.
