{"id":73930,"date":"2016-03-01T16:27:26","date_gmt":"2016-03-01T21:27:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=73930"},"modified":"2016-03-01T16:27:26","modified_gmt":"2016-03-01T21:27:26","slug":"you-need-to-know-about-louis-zamperini","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2016\/03\/01\/you-need-to-know-about-louis-zamperini\/","title":{"rendered":"You need to know about Louis Zamperini"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This Sunday, you will have the opportunity to hear about an outstanding individual by meeting his son.\u00a0Luke Zamperini will be speaking at the Niswonger this Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.\u00a0 Luke is the son of Louis Zamperini, who unfortunately passed on in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Some of you may be familiar with Louis\u2019 story, maybe through the book or perhaps the movie <em>Unbroken<\/em>.\u00a0If you have seen or read this story, you no doubt are interested in hearing his son\u2019s personal account.\u00a0And if you haven\u2019t seen the movie or read the book, you absolutely need to come this Sunday to hear about this amazing man.<\/p>\n<p>I realize the word \u201camazing\u201d is overused these days, but in the case of Louis Zamperini, it is most appropriate.<\/p>\n<p>Louis was an Olympic athlete as a runner in the Berlin Olympics of 1936.\u00a0Following his Olympic feats, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps and became a bombardier in the Pacific in World War II.<\/p>\n<p>Following a crash in the middle of the Pacific, he survived in a lifeboat at sea for a miraculous 47 days.\u00a0The story of his survival is amazing in itself.\u00a0He eventually was rescued, only to have it be by the Japanese.<\/p>\n<p>He became a prisoner of war and the story continues again to be amazing.\u00a0As a prisoner, he was put through incredible torture, perhaps partially because he was known as an Olympic hero.\u00a0The stories of his treatment are beyond belief, yet through all of this, they were unable to break him.\u00a0Thus the title of his book and movie of his story: \u201cUnbroken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The movie, which was artfully produced and directed by Angelina Jolie, leaves the story at this point.\u00a0An incredible story to be told \u2026 but not the whole story!\u00a0You must read the book and\/or come to the Niswonger this Sunday to find out \u201cthe rest of the story\u201d, as Paul Harvey used to say.<\/p>\n<p>Luke Zamperini will share with us first-hand stories his father used to tell him of his experiences.
