More than 10,000 bicycle helmets will be distributed this year as part of the Ohio AAP\u2019s \u201cPut a Lid on It!\u201d bike helmet safety awareness campaign, in conjunction with \u201cBike Helmet Safety Awareness Week\u201d May 9-21.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThousands of children are hurt and several killed in Ohio every year after injuries received while riding a bike,\u201d said Melissa Wervey Arnold, chief executive officer of the Ohio AAP. \u201cWe are incredibly grateful for ODOT\u2019s support of our \u2018Put a Lid on It\u2019 campaign again this year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Put-A-Lid-On-It-logo-4-2016.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-75555\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-75555\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Put-A-Lid-On-It-logo-4-2016.jpg\" alt=\"Put A Lid On It logo 4-2016\" width=\"250\" height=\"125\" \/><\/a>\u201cWith their continued support, we will be able to supply more bike helmets to children this year &#8212; and save more lives &#8212; than ever before,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>At an event in Columbus, ODOT and Ohio AAP will distribute bike helmets to local organizations across the state and provide training on biking education, including how to properly fit children with bike helmets.<\/p>\n<p>A combination of efforts is necessary to effectively increase helmet usage rates among Ohio children, including raising awareness of the benefits, encouraging model behavior among adults, distributing bike helmets to Ohio children and advocating for supportive public policies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpring is here and children are getting out to enjoy the great outdoors on their bikes; we want them to be as safe as possible by having the right equipment,\u201d said ODOT Director Jerry Wray. \u201cWe\u2019re happy to be a partner in this effort to get helmets to children who may not otherwise have easy access to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As part of Ohio\u2019s transportation system, the state has 4,207 miles of bike routes and trails, including the Ohio to Erie Trail, which connects Cincinnati and Cleveland.
