{"id":76148,"date":"2016-05-09T07:32:16","date_gmt":"2016-05-09T12:32:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=76148"},"modified":"2016-05-09T07:32:52","modified_gmt":"2016-05-09T12:32:52","slug":"latta-urges-fcc-to-rethink-set-top-box-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2016\/05\/09\/latta-urges-fcc-to-rethink-set-top-box-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"Latta says FCC set-top box plan flawed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>VW independent\/submitted information<\/em><\/p>\n<p>WASHINGTON, D.C. \u2013\u00a0U.S. Representative Bob Latta (R-Ohio), along with Representatives Kevin Cramer (R-North Dakota), Kurt Schrader (D-Oregon), and Collin Peterson (D-Minnesota), sent a <a href=\"http:\/\/latta.house.gov\/UploadedFiles\/5.5.16_-_Bipartisan_Set-Top_Box_Letter_on_Small_Video_Providers.pdf\">letter<\/a> to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Wheeler urging the FCC to reexamine its set-top box proposal and to reconsider the plan\u2019s implications on small and rural pay-TV providers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur bipartisan letter recognizes the efforts of the FCC to support a competitive environment for video competition, but disagrees with their approach,\u201d said Latta.\u00a0\u201cThe Commission\u2019s set-top box proposal is a technical mandate that will obstruct the future of pay-TV by having programmers retrofit their systems to comply with a new standard that doesn\u2019t yet exist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only would a new standard likely take years to develop, slowing and stifling innovation, but it would also be costly to reconfigure systems, especially for small and rural providers,\u201d Latta added. \u201cFurthermore, the marketplace continues to prove that this proposal is obsolete.\u00a0This is evident by Comcast\u2019s recent announcement to launch an apps-based program to allow their customers to access their video programming through a range of retail devices without having to lease a set-top box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Latta noted that pro-consumer initiatives such as Comcast\u2019s look towards the future of technology rather than taking a backwards approach like the FCC\u2019s proposal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope this letter will convince the Commission not to move forward on the set-top box proceeding and reconsider the proposed rule, including the impacts it would have on small providers and consumers alike,\u201d Latta noted.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>VW independent\/submitted information WASHINGTON, D.C. \u2013\u00a0U.S. Representative Bob Latta (R-Ohio), along with Representatives Kevin Cramer (R-North Dakota), Kurt Schrader (D-Oregon), and Collin Peterson (D-Minnesota), sent a letter to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Wheeler urging the FCC to reexamine its set-top box proposal and to reconsider the plan\u2019s implications on small and rural pay-TV providers.
