{"id":77044,"date":"2016-06-10T08:49:56","date_gmt":"2016-06-10T13:49:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=77044"},"modified":"2016-06-10T08:51:12","modified_gmt":"2016-06-10T13:51:12","slug":"gazebo-built-to-honor-glen-jenkins-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2016\/06\/10\/gazebo-built-to-honor-glen-jenkins-service\/","title":{"rendered":"Gazebo built to honor Van Wert resident"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>VW independent\/submitted information<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Longtime Habitat for Humanity volunteer Glen Jenkins was recently honored with the building of a gazebo on the grounds of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Van Wert. As an unofficial event of the Van Wert Peony Festival, a dedication of the structure was performed this past weekend with family, friends, and associates attending.<\/p>\n<p>From 2000 until his death in 2014, Mr. Jenkins had been secretary-treasurer and handled legal matters for the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity. During his tenure, 12 homes were erected around the county. In addition to this work, he served on St. Mary\u2019s financial and parish councils intermittently for an even longer period of time.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_77045\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-77045\" style=\"width: 330px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Jenkins-gazebo-6-2016.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-77045\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-77045\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Jenkins-gazebo-6-2016.jpg\" alt=\"Members of Glen Jenkins' family (above) were on hand to dedicate a gazebo in his honor on the grounds of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. Jones served as spokesman and offered high praise for Jenkins\u2019 commitment and hard work on behalf of the organization.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis wisdom, calm demeanor, wit, and business sense, along with his desire to help others, was a most valuable asset, not only to our organization, but to the community as well, and he is still sorely missed,\u201d Jones said.<\/p>\n<p>He also noted that, when Jenkins passed away two years ago, Habitat members wanted, as a group, to do something in his honor, something that would be visible in the community and worthy of honoring not only his commitment to Habitat, but also his commitment and service to the Van Wert community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter much discussion and many ideas, we decided, because of Glen\u2019s involvement in Rotary and its work in Fountain Park, to build a gazebo in St. Mary\u2019s Memorial Garden to recognize not only Glen\u2019s service to Habitat and the Van Wert community,\u00a0but also his service as an active parishioner of St. Mary\u2019s Church,\u201d Jones added.<\/p>\n<p>The Jenkins family was represented by Glen\u2019s wife, Patricia, daughter Mary of Van Wert, and sons Howie, of Okeana, and Patrick, from Bethel, who spoke of Glen\u2019s commitment to Habitat and the community.<\/p>\n<p>Two daughters, Robin (Shephard) and Chris (McCarty), of the Washington, D.C., area, were unable to attend.<\/p>\n<p>Father Stan Szybka of St. Mary\u2019s Church offered the dedication prayers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>VW independent\/submitted information Longtime Habitat for Humanity volunteer Glen Jenkins was recently honored with the building of a gazebo on the grounds of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Van Wert.
