(Bob Barnes\/Van Wert independent)\" width=\"350\" height=\"279\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-79124\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Van Wert running back Tristan\u00a0Wehner (7) scores during Friday night&#8217;s scrimmage between the Cougars and Crestview Knights.<\/strong> <em>(Bob Barnes\/Van Wert independent)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Cougar Jacoby Kelly scored on a 1-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and Eric Workman\u2019s extra point gave the Cougars a 7-0 lead.<\/p>\n<p>Van Wert scored twice more in the second quarter, on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Lawson Blackmore to Nate Place, and on a throw from Storm Pierce that was deflected, but caught in the end zone by Brice Klausing.<\/p>\n<p>Workman\u2019s second extra-point attempt of the night was good, but the third failed.<\/p>\n<p>Sandwiched between those scores was a 35-yard touchdown run by Crestview\u2019s Trevor Gibson. The extra-point attempt by Dylan Hicks was no good, and the Knights trailed 20-6 at halftime.<\/p>\n<p>Reserve players took most of the snaps in the second half, and Van Wert found the end zone twice in the third quarter. Tristan Wehner scored on a 12-yard keeper and Rodney Calvelage broke several tackles on the way to a 55-yard touchdown run.<\/p>\n<p>Both extra point attempts were no good, but the Cougars led 32-6.<\/p>\n<p>The game\u2019s final touchdown came late in the fourth quarter when Crestview\u2019s Kaden Short fired a 13-yard touchdown strike to Charles Stefanek, and Hicks provided the PAT.<\/p>\n<p>A scary moment occurred in the fourth quarter, when sophomore defensive back Josiah Updegrove went down with an apparent hip injury and was transported for evaluation.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_79125\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-79125\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-79125\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/VW-vs.-Crestview-scrimmage-8-19-16-Knittle-run.jpg\" alt=\"Crestview's Payton Knittle (35) is brought down by a host of Cougar defenders after a gainer in Friday's scrimmage between the two teams at Crestview. (Bob Barnes\/Van Wert independent)\" width=\"350\" height=\"280\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-79125\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Crestview&#8217;s Payton Knittle (35) is brought down by a host of Cougar defenders after a gainer in Friday&#8217;s scrimmage between the two teams at Crestview.<\/strong> <em>(Bob Barnes\/Van Wert independent)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Crestview quarterbacks Drew Kline and Dylan Grandstaff combined to complete 1 of 10 passes for 10 yards.<\/p>\n<p>Payton Knittle had eight carries and 77 yards on the ground, while Trevor Gibson had five carries for 45 yards and a touchdown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we clean up our assignments and play smarter football, we can match up okay,\u201d Crestview Head Coach Jared Owens said after the scrimmage.<\/p>\n<p>Owens added that he liked the fire and energy of the reserve players in the second half.<\/p>\n<p>Van Wert quarterbacks Storm Pierce and Lawson Blackmore were 13-of-20 for 148 yards and two touchdowns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe threw the football a little bit better tonight and protected it better,\u201d said Van Wert Head Coach Keith Recker, who also noted the defense played a bit better, saying it\u2019s been a \u201clearning curve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Crestview will open the season at home Friday night against non-conference rival Parkway.<\/p>\n<p>Van Wert\u2019s traditional regular season opener will be at home against Bryan.
