Knodel has taught for 36 years, while Harner has been a teacher for 38 years.

The board also discussed finances — and particularly revenues — as part of Treasurer Laura Metzger’s report. Metzger first talked about the difficulty of comparing school years, as far as revenue goes, particularly when stimulus dollars are factored in. In talking about Crestview’s five-year forecast, the district treasurer noted that revenues were low because a levy up for renewal in November was not included in the totals, while only half of the district’s income tax levy — due to expire in 2015 — was included.

The board and administration discussed the need to renew both the permanent improvement levy and an emergency operating levy, both of which will be placed on the ballot this November.

Estes stressed, though, that district plans to seek no new money to operate the schools.

“Our goal is to run the school with the money we have been given and to not ask for any more money,” the superintendent said, noting that the district has not had a new tax since the income tax levy was passed.

Estes also noted that pension reform is apparently not a priority for the Ohio General Assembly at this time, with Senate Bill 5 taking up much of legislators’ time and energy prior to passage of the state budget prior to July 1.

Metzger also talked about the district’s recent audit, which she said did not include any material findings, although several minor procedural issues were raised.

Also Monday, the board welcomed two new teachers: Natasha DuVall and Craig Taylor. Both were given one-year limited contracts as middle childhood teachers (grades 4-9) for the coming school year. Board members also approved hiring Jill Pascute as a high school Spanish teacher for the coming school year and Keith Langdon as a junior high-high school teacher.

In other action, the board:

Approved the following teachers to be used on an as-needed basis for summer high school and elementary intervention and education programs: Brenda Dye, Mark Hanover, Rebecca Macki, Deanna Ray, Melissa Roop, Ali Sawmiller, Darby Schwieterman and Jim Wharton.

Approved the following supplemental contracts for the coming school year: DuVall, cheerleader advisor; Danille Hancock, chorus; Diane Wilson, junior varsity girls’ basketball coach; Shane Leeth, golf assistant; Langdon, National Honor Society and high school Scholastic Bowl advisor; and Keith Rydell, public relations.

Crestview teacher Pam Harner is recognized by Superintendent Mike Estes for her 38 years in education.

Approved Anne Myers as a volunteer volleyball coach.

Recognized FFA advisor Paul Pohlman and FFA students for their successful trip to the state FFA convention.

Authorized the following overnight trips: Boys’ basketball team to Findlay with Coach Jeremy Best and staff on June 24-26; football players to Darrin Slack Quarterback Academy Camp in Chicago, Ill., with Coach Chris Roop on July 7-9; girls’ basketball team to Findlay University with Coach Greg Rickard and staff on July 8-10; volleyball team to Maumee Bay Spiketacular with Coach Tammy Gregory and staff on July 21-23; girls’ soccer team to Camp Palmer in Fayette with Coach Melissa Mefferd on July 28-29; cross country team members to Marmon Valley Farm near Zanesfield with Coach Jeff Bagley and staff on August 8-20.

Approved the list of graduates for 2011.

Renewed membership in the Ohio High School Athletic Association.

Approved a Tax Increment Financing proposal for Tully Township for a chicken farm as presented.

Heard the first reading of a number of proposed new, revised, deleted or replacement bylaws and policies, as recommended by NEOLA.

Went into executive session to discuss personnel matters, with no action taken afterward.

The next meeting of the Crestview Local Board of Education will be at 6 p.m. Monday, June 20, in the district boardroom.

DAVE MOSIER/independent editor CONVOY — The Crestview Local Board of Education honored two retiring teachers and also discussed renewal of two important sources of revenue for the district during its May meeting Monday in the district boardroom.
