Lincolnview Local Board of Education honored retiring staff members and also talked about future revenue concerns during its May meeting Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Superintendent Doug Fries and board members honored four employees who will be retiring at the end of the school year. They include teachers Frank Rohrs (35 years), Marsha Owens (33 years), and Debra McConahy (23 years), and bus driver Betty Cooper (14 years).<\/p>\n

All were given plaques honoring their service to the district.<\/p>\n

Treasurer Troy Bowersock noted during his report to the board that, while the district should finish in the black this year, but cuts in state revenues will likely mean the district will be spending more than it takes in for the next four years. Bowersock said he based his five-year forecast on pending budget figures from the state for the next two years and then estimated the remaining two years of the forecast would be \u201cflat-lined\u201d with the last year of Governor John Kasich\u2019s current proposed biennial budget, which will be adopted prior to July 1, when it takes effect.<\/p>\n

Board member Eric Germann, the board\u2019s legislative liaison, noted that attempts are being made by Republican legislators to add portions of Senate Bill 5 — which seeks to limit collective bargaining rights for state employees — into the state budget bill.<\/p>\n

If successful, Germann noted, the move would prevent union organizers from placing a ballot referendum challenging the limitations, since appropriations legislation is exempt cannot be the subject of a referendum.<\/p>\n

Bowersock did have some positive financial news, noting that the district still has approximately $120,000 remaining from interest earned on the school facilities project, while Fries had a potential use for at least some of that money: a project that calls for constructing a press box and bleachers at the district track-soccer complex.<\/p>\n

Although at least one member had some reservations, the board also unanimously approved a proposal by Van Wert Federal Savings Bank to pay $25,000 over five years to place an advertising logo on the gymnasium floor. A motion had to be made at the May meeting because the gym floor is to be refinished in mid-June.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is some revenue for the athletic department,\u201d Fries said of the proposal.<\/p>\n

Board member Alan Morris wasn\u2019t all that excited about the plan, but said he could \u201clive with it for the first five years.\u201d<\/p>\n

The superintendent also noted that preliminary test scores have been released on the Ohio Graduation Test, noting that the district should meet state standards, but also noting that some appeals are also likely on some of the scores, with final results coming in September.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re off to a good start, but there\u2019s a long way to go,\u201d Fries said, noting that test results in grades 3-8 have yet to be released.<\/p>\n

The superintendent during his report also noted that Lincolnview and Crestview are looking at splitting the cost of a school psychologist that would provide services to both schools.<\/p>\n

Board members and administration were not all that excited about a proposal to put solar panels on district property, since the idea would likely mean placing the panels on carports in the parking lot — an idea that didn\u2019t appeal to school officials.<\/p>\n

In other action, the board:<\/p>\n

  • Praised the Junior Class and advisor June Young for this year\u2019s prom decorations.<\/li>\n
  • Approved a resolution authorizing a financial literacy program in the district.<\/li>\n
  • Authorized membership in the Ohio High School Athletic Association.<\/li>\n
  • Accepted the following donations: $200 from the Etzler Family Scholarship, $200 from the Beta Delta Chapter of Psi Iota Xi Sorority to purchase library books and periodicals, $3,300 from First Federal Savings and Loan of Van Wert for the new baseball field complex.<\/li>\n
  • Authorized several overnight trips for athletic programs, as well as athletic camps for girls\u2019 and boys\u2019 basketball and volleyball.<\/li>\n
  • Approved Title I grant recommendations, including appointing Marsh Principal Roger Salisbury as Title I supervisor and Elementary Principal Gordon Stemen as Title I coordinator.<\/li>\n
  • Hired Craig Staley as an hourly bus maintenance worker under the direction of Rodoc.<\/li>\n
  • Granted one-year supplemental OGT intervention contracts to Paula Johnson and Adam Owens for summer intervention to take place June 13-17.<\/li>\n
  • Employed Cheryl Baer as a substitute custodian, cook, and secretary for the remainder of the current school year.<\/li>\n
  • Accepted Bill Kelly\u2019s resignation as a substitute cook and aide.<\/li>\n
  • Approved the following supplemental contracts: Anna Battle, high school instrumental and National Honor Society advisor; Chad Kraner, class play; Beth Schnipke, annual with class; Deb Stetler, newspaper; Gary Nolan, high school Science Club advisor and Saturday School teacher; Pat Woirol, French and Spanish club advisor; Rachel Rohrs, freshman class advisor; Jay Hoersten, Industrial Tech advisor; Tony Campbell, FFA and Young Farmers advisor; Paula Johnson, Student Council advisor; Kay Wilusz, Scholastic Bowl advisor; Stacy Korte, swing choir director; Matt Alessandrini, Drama Club advisor; Kevin Losh, Saturday School substitute and head golf coach; Tom Bryan, athletic director; Brad Mendenhall, assistant athletic director, girls\u2019 basketball assistant coach and head baseball coach; Dan Williamson, girls\u2019 head basketball coach; Heidi Oberhaus, girls\u2019 seventh grade basketball coach; Brad Doidge, assistant softball coach; Matt Langdon, head track coach and head cross country coach; Sandra Dowdy, junior high track coach.<\/li>\n
