(Photo submitted.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One way to blur the background to make your subject stand out is by your choice of lens and aperture setting. \u00a0Another way is to apply a <strong>Gaussian Blur <\/strong>with your computer&#8217;s photo editing program. \u00a0This blur is named after an early German mathematician, Karl F. Gauss, who worked out the math for what is now the Gaussian Function.<\/p>\n<p>Although the steps and\/or looks may vary with different photo editing programs, the blur is pretty much achieved by:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\u00a0Open the picture in the editing program.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Highlight the area or subject you wish to keep in sharp focus.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Select the <strong>inverse, <\/strong>which tells your computer to deal with everything but what you marked in Step 2.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Click on <strong>Filters<\/strong>, then\u00a0<strong>Blur, <\/strong>and then\u00a0<strong>Gaussian Blur, <\/strong>which will bring up the illustration with this article.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Click the box to activate the <strong>Preview <\/strong>feature so you can see how much you&#8217;re changing the background.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Click on the <strong>&#8211; <\/strong>to zoom\u00a0<strong>out<\/strong> and the\u00a0<strong>+ <\/strong>to zoom <strong>in<\/strong> for a closer look at what you&#8217;re changing.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Selecting a larger and larger radius will throw the background more and more out of focus.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0When you get the results you like, click the <strong>OK <\/strong>and the change is completed.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Now you have two methods of emphasizing the subject, compliments of the Van Wert Area Photography Club.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Rex Dolby One way to blur the background to make your subject stand out is by your choice of lens and aperture setting. \u00a0Another way is to apply a Gaussian Blur with your computer&#8217;s photo editing program. \u00a0This blur is named after an early German mathematician, Karl F.
