{"id":8725,"date":"2011-06-02T00:03:54","date_gmt":"2011-06-02T05:03:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/?p=8725"},"modified":"2011-06-02T00:50:32","modified_gmt":"2011-06-02T05:50:32","slug":"local-elks-to-have-flag-day-ceremony","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2011\/06\/02\/local-elks-to-have-flag-day-ceremony\/","title":{"rendered":"Local Elks to have Flag Day ceremony"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>All local residents are encouraged to attend the annual Flag Day service, which will be held on Wednesday, June 15, at 7 p.m. at the Van Wert Elks lodge off Van Wert-Decatur Road.<\/p>\n<p>The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks sponsors the annual event.\u00a0 Also participating will be the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of America.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-8735\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Flag-Day-2011-logo.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"136\" \/>Flag Day, celebrated each June 14 as specified by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916, honors the creation of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States.\u00a0 Flag Day did not become formally recognized until President Harry Truman, himself an Elk, signed the resolution in 1949 declaring Flag Day an official national holiday.<\/p>\n<p>The Continental Congress adopted the design of the Stars and Stripes on June 14, 1777, resolving that \u201cThe flag of the United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white on a blue field, representing a new constellation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Elks is the first and only fraternal organization to mandate that on June 14 every year, each lodge must conduct a solemn and beautiful Flag Day ceremony.\u00a0\u00a0 This ceremony is open to the public so that we can show our local communities that we honor our flag and all it represents.<\/p>\n<p>As part of this year\u2019s ceremony the local lodge winners of the Grand Lodge Americanism Contest will read their winning essays.<\/p>\n<p>Van Wert Elks Exalted Ruler Keith S. Rydell encourages all residents to attend the lodge\u2019s Flag Day ceremony and demonstrate their love of flag and county.
