Bob Barnes\/Van Wert independent\" width=\"250\" height=\"308\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-88152\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Lincolnview salutatorian Nick Motycka speaks during Lincolnview&#8217;s 57th commencement service on Sunday afternoon.<\/strong> <em>Bob Barnes\/Van Wert independent<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI was loud, nerdy, and very round,\u201d Motycka joked. \u201cAnd many people would say I\u2019m still two of those things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, this class let me into their hearts, accepting me as a friend and peer because more than anything, I think this class values good, kind people &#8212; which means I somehow had you all completely fooled,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Motycka focused on the passing of time and how when looking back, you only remember a fraction of the things you\u2019ve been through &#8212; most of them positive experiences.<\/p>\n<p>However, sometimes, to get to a happy ending, you have to struggle through the not-so-happy. The Motycka family did just that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll tell you about my mom for a second,\u201d said Motycka. \u201cShe has been kicking cancer\u2019s butt, and there\u2019s one really important thing I\u2019ve learned: courage and success are tested in the daily grind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He discussed the small victories in life and emphasized their importance. Motycka also discussed how each person is guaranteed to change the world somehow and encouraged his peers to do it to the best of their abilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive all you can to the world,\u201d said Motycka. \u201cAnd, if it doesn\u2019t give back, give it some more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Motycka will be attending Dartmouth College in the fall majoring in government.<\/p>\n<p>Allison Berryman, class valedictorian, focused on how experiences shape the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we sit here today, I can\u2019t help but look back to elementary school,\u201d said Berryman. \u201cIn those days, we couldn\u2019t even imagine being where we are today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Berryman reflected on all the things that changed, affecting where each of them are today:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe never would have thought that our friend groups would change. We never would have thought we would want to be more than a teacher, rock star or baker. We never would have thought about the events that have happened in our life up to now. She mentioned that some would thrive in higher education, some in the workforce and some in the military.<\/p>\n<p>She closed with encouragement and good wishes to her classmates.<\/p>\n<p>Berryman is the daughter of Kirk and Erica Berryman and will be attending the University of Findlay majoring in pharmacy.<\/p>\n<p>McKenzie Davis, class president, is the daughter of Scott and Amber Davis. She will be attending The Ohio State University majoring in agribusiness and applied economics. Davis spoke about \u201cThe Lancer Way\u201d and how it shaped her high school career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring our freshman year, Mr. Snyder, our new superintendent, had this saying of doing things: \u2018The Lancer Way\u2019,\u201d said Davis. \u201cWe all thought it was kind of silly at first; but now, four years later, we have realized he was right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Davis spoke highly of the Lincolnview community and the support it gives to the school and students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoing things The Lancer Way has become second nature to us all,\u201d Davis. \u201cSupporting our sports teams, wearing blue and gold and singing the alma mater are all things that we Lancers love to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Each speaker left the 53 graduates and their friends and families with pieces of advice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeep doing things \u2018The Lancer Way,\u2019 and remember we don\u2019t always have to fit in, as long as we continue being ourselves,\u201d said Davis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet your talent shine through and make your mark on the people you interact with everyday,\u201d said Berryman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemember where you came from,\u201d said Motycka. \u201cBecause I know that I will have a hard time forgetting.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CLAIRE CLAY\/for the VW independent \u201cRemember where you came from,\u201d said senior Nick Motycka, class salutatorian, during Lincolnview High School\u2019s 57th commencement ceremony.
