Here&#8217;s the reasoning. \u00a0Think of snow drifts or sand dunes shot at noon without shadows,\u00a0then the same scene recorded with shadows shot earlier or later in the day.\u00a0\u00a0There&#8217;s quite a difference\u00a0between the two isn&#8217;t there?<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_89733\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-89733\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-89733\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Camera-Club-News-6-2017-Architectural-Shadows.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"226\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-89733\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>An example of how shadows can add to a composition by Rex Dolby<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Almost any time you wish to make texture or surface details\u00a0part of the composition, such as weathered wood on a barn or text on a monument, light at a low angle will help.<\/p>\n<p>Another situation arises when\u00a0you don&#8217;t have an object for your foreground, possibly a well-positioned shadow can fill in the blank space, thus adding depth to the scene and\/or leading the viewer&#8217;s eye into the picture.<\/p>\n<p>Interesting shadows on a surface may themselves become the subject of a photo, as well as staging a photo of a person doing an action with a real prop on the ground\u00a0that the shadow appears to be kicking, holding or throwing.<\/p>\n<p>We think of portrait photography as lighting-not shadows, but the more you study good portraits, the more you become aware of how shadows add to the image and dominate a dramatic portrait.<\/p>\n<p>Set your camera to underexpose one or two stops so you won&#8217;t burn out the highlights nor fill in the shadows.\u00a0For more discussion, why not attend the next Van Wert Area Photography Club meeting on Thursday,\u00a0July 13, at 114 S.
