{"id":90176,"date":"2017-07-13T07:52:04","date_gmt":"2017-07-13T12:52:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=90176"},"modified":"2017-07-13T07:53:00","modified_gmt":"2017-07-13T12:53:00","slug":"latta-votes-for-anti-human-trafficking-bills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2017\/07\/13\/latta-votes-for-anti-human-trafficking-bills\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. House OKs human trafficking bills"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Submitted information<\/em><\/p>\n<p>WASHINGTON, D.C.\u00a0&#8212;<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>U.S. Representative Bob Latta (R-Bowling Green) joined his House colleagues in helping pass three bipartisan anti-trafficking bills that would seek to curb a problem\u00a0plaguing\u00a0communities across the country.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/115\/bills\/hr2200\/BILLS-115hr2200ih.pdf\">H.R. 2200<\/a>, the Fredrick Douglass Trafficking Victims Prevention and Protection Act, reauthorizes a fund that prevents human trafficking, protects victims, and prosecutes\u00a0traffickers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/115\/bills\/hr2664\/BILLS-115hr2664ih.pdf\">H.R. 2664<\/a>, the Enhancing Detection of Human Trafficking Act, establishes a training program for Department of Labor employees to improve their ability to recognize\u00a0trafficking\u00a0and respond more\u00a0effectively\u00a0when cases are\u00a0detected.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/115\/bills\/hr2480\/BILLS-115hr2480ih.pdf\">H.R. 2480<\/a>, the Empowering Law Enforcement to Fight Sex Trafficking Demand Act, expands eligibility for Department of Justice grants to apply to law enforcement agencies instituting programs to combat trafficking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSex trafficking is a crime that is prevalent in far too many communities in Ohio and across America,\u201d said Latta.\u00a0\u201cTo stop this problem, policies are needed to prevent the vulnerable from being exploited, and law\u00a0enforcement\u00a0needs the resources to protect victims and bring traffickers to justice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe programs supported by these three bills will\u00a0empower\u00a0local, state, and federal authorities to identify when trafficking is\u00a0occurring, and\u00a0providing them with the tools to address the problem,\u201d Latta added. \u201cIt\u2019s hard to find a crime as heinous and evil as the exploitation of young, vulnerable children, and the House is continuing to take bipartisan action to combat trafficking and bring\u00a0perpetrators to justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center, Ohio ranks fifth in the nation of the states with the most reported trafficking cases since 2007. In addition to the three bills passed on Wednesday, the U.S. House of Representatives also recently passed a package of bills to combat trafficking.
