{"id":90231,"date":"2017-07-14T07:27:46","date_gmt":"2017-07-14T12:27:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=90231"},"modified":"2017-07-14T07:27:46","modified_gmt":"2017-07-14T12:27:46","slug":"u-s-house-oks-latta-water-quality-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2017\/07\/14\/u-s-house-oks-latta-water-quality-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. House OKs Latta water quality bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Submitted information<\/em><\/p>\n<p>WASHINGTON, D.C.\u00a0&#8212;\u00a0The U.S. House of\u00a0Representatives\u00a0Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Environment has approved provisions authored by U.S. Representative Bob Latta (R-Bowling Green) as part of a larger\u00a0drinking\u00a0water\u00a0infrastructure bill, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/energycommerce.house.gov\/news-center\/press-releases\/subenvironment-advances-legislation-modernize-nation-s-drinking-water\">Drinking Water System Improvement Act<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The included provisions originated from legislation that Latta authored,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/latta.house.gov\/news\/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=398366\">the\u00a0Drinking Water\u00a0Affordability Act<\/a>, and would help public water systems improve infrastructure and ensure safer drinking water.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33253\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33253\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-33253\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Latta-Bob-8-2012.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"240\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33253\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Bob Latta<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Provisions authored by Latta that were included in the bill would:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Provide increased flexibility for the repayment of federal loans for states and local communities that use the funds to finance clean drinking water infrastructure projects<\/li>\n<li>Cut burdensome red tape by looking at ways to remove duplicative reporting and paperwork requirements when state standards are equally stringent &#8212; or more so &#8212; than federal standards<\/li>\n<li>Help disadvantaged communities better finance their infrastructure through the use of federal funding<\/li>\n<li>Ensures communities have the ability to update their\u00a0assessments for their source water protection needs<\/li>\n<li>Develop best practices to streamline and efficiently provide communities with drinking water revolving loan funds<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cProviding increased flexibility to state and local governments to meet their specific\u00a0drinking water needs will make it easier to move ahead with much-needed infrastructure projects,\u201d said Latta.\u00a0\u201cRemoving\u00a0duplicative\u00a0federal requirements and making it easier to repay federal loans will provide more options for communities\u00a0&#8212; including disadvantaged ones\u00a0&#8212; to ensure safe drinking water.
