{"id":91548,"date":"2017-08-17T06:19:05","date_gmt":"2017-08-17T11:19:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=91548"},"modified":"2017-08-17T06:19:05","modified_gmt":"2017-08-17T11:19:05","slug":"scrap-metal-sculptures-collages-at-wass","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2017\/08\/17\/scrap-metal-sculptures-collages-at-wass\/","title":{"rendered":"Scrap metal sculptures, collages at Wass"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was such an honor and fun to work with the Scrap Detroit group this weekend in the Motor City for its second annual scrap metal art event.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_91549\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-91549\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-91549\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Wass-Up-at-Wass-8-16-17-sculpture-by-Tonnegato.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"320\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-91549\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>David Tonnegato, winner of Scrap Detroit 2017, and other artists\u2019 work were displayed at the iconic \u201cSpirit of Detroit\u201d prior to arriving at Wassenberg Art Center. These large, interactive sculptures will be on exhibit beginning Friday at 7:30 p.m.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After a brief showing in front of the iconic sculpture Spirit of Detroit in downtown, the sculptures followed me home! Over 700 people voted on their favorite piece and the winner, Dave Tonnegato, won $1,000. Dave will make the trip to the Wassenberg Art Center for our scrap material exhibit,\u00a0\u201cScrapped!\u201d, and will be providing a welding art demo during the opening party on August 18, 7:30 to 10:30 p.m., following the Main Street Van Wert\u2019s \u201cHidden Spaces\u201d tour.<\/p>\n<p>This exhibit is comprised of a group of 11 welders from the Detroit area who have made kinetic sculptures out of 250 pounds of scrap bicycle parts, and a Toledo artist, Danielle Herrera, who makes two-dimensional art out of fabric, paper, and other tossed out materials such as zippers.<\/p>\n<p>These artists from these two cities will collide at the Wassenberg Art Center with their sculptures and collages. Music will be provided by Lee Warren and Mike Hallock of Toledo, while food and a cash bar are available. In addition, we will be featuring a beer tasting from brand new High 5 brewing, a group who hopes to bring a brewery to Van Wert!<\/p>\n<p>The sculptures will then be auctioned off in Detroit in October. Growers and makers are encouraged to apply. Producers and artisans who sign up can be featured free of charge in our Farmers Market directory on the Wassenberg Art Center website.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Art Classes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Classic Watercolor:<\/strong>\u00a0Tuesday mornings from 10 a.m.-noon. Online sign-up available.\u00a0This class resumes in September.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ArtNight:<\/strong>\u00a0Featured ArtNight projects will be starting back up in September and we will host every Thursday, 6\u20139 p.m. It is free to hang out at ArtNight, and you don\u2019t even have to make art. Sit and breeze a bit with folks. Feel free to bring snacks and invite your friends and the cash bar is open. Do you play an instrument? Bring it and we will hook you up.
