{"id":93584,"date":"2017-09-28T06:11:03","date_gmt":"2017-09-28T11:11:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=93584"},"modified":"2017-09-28T06:11:31","modified_gmt":"2017-09-28T11:11:31","slug":"independent-enhances-sports-coverage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2017\/09\/28\/independent-enhances-sports-coverage\/","title":{"rendered":"independent enhances sports coverage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>DAVE MOSIER\/<\/strong><em>independent editor<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As many people have likely noticed, <em>The Van Wert independent\u2019s<\/em> sports coverage has been greatly enhanced under new Sports Editor Scott Truxell.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to coverage of seasonal prep sports, Truxell also included season preview stories for county football, volleyball, cross country, soccer, golf, and girls\u2019 tennis teams. He has also implemented an \u201cAthlete of the Week\u201d program for athletes in all sports who attend Van Wert, Crestview, and Lincolnview school districts. Athletes selected each week from nominations sent in by coaches from the three schools receive a t-shirt from Northwest Ohio Welch Trophy and a write-up in <em>The Van Wert independent<\/em>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_93306\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-93306\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-93306\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/MM.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"375\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-93306\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Lincolnview&#8217;s Marissa Miller was The Van Wert independent&#8217;s first &#8220;Student Athlete of the Week&#8221;.<\/strong> <em>VW independent file photo<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Truxell has also added a \u201cCoaches Corner\u201d feature that includes comments from local coaches from various seasonal sports, as well as weekly football predictions and video highlights from various sports contests, including Van Wert Youth Football.<\/p>\n<p>More sports feature stories are also in the works, as well as a \u201cWeek Ahead in Prep Sports\u201d feature that provides a look at the coming week in sports.<\/p>\n<p>Truxell said he also plans to continue the above features throughout the school year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe plan is to have all of the above roll over to the winter sports season (boys\u2019 and girls\u2019 basketball, wrestling, bowling, and swimming), with some of the features also continuing into the spring sports season.<\/p>\n<p>Plans are to also implement a podcast and video page that would feature sports interview and highlights, as well as news videos and other media selections.<\/p>\n<p>Truxell, who got his start in radio, said some of the features may eventually be ported over to WKSD or WERT Radio, but added there are no plans to do so at the present time.<\/p>\n<p>The new sports editor began adding enhanced sports coverage this past summer to give readers a \u201ctaste of what\u2019s to come,\u201d but most of the above features have now been implemented.<\/p>\n<p>Truxell is also seeking feedback from <em>Van Wert independent<\/em> readers on the new features and any suggestions they may have on what kinds of future sports coverage they would like to see on the online news site.
