{"id":97735,"date":"2018-01-19T08:48:19","date_gmt":"2018-01-19T13:48:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=97735"},"modified":"2018-01-19T08:48:55","modified_gmt":"2018-01-19T13:48:55","slug":"why-to-consider-using-raw-photo-format","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2018\/01\/19\/why-to-consider-using-raw-photo-format\/","title":{"rendered":"Why to consider using raw photo format"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week we\u2019ll try to take some of the mystery out of using the raw format.\u00a0 The following information is based on a page by Rob Lim on a website named\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/photographyconcentrate.com\/\">photographyconcentrate.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Not included in the article is the fact that, unlike JPEG, which stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group, or TIFF, which stands for Tagged Image File Format, raw doesn\u2019t stand for anything other\u00a0than the complete, unprocessed information recorded by the camera\u2019s sensor.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0As a result, it should only appear as lower case letters, and what it captures varies from one\u00a0camera manufacturer to another.\u00a0\u00a0Because no information is compressed with\u00a0raw, you\u2019re able to produce higher quality images, as well as correct problem images that would be unrecoverable if shot in the\u00a0JPEG format.<\/p>\n<p>Levels of brightness are the number of steps from black to white in an image.\u00a0 The more you have, the smoother the transitions of tones.\u00a0\u00a0JPEG\u00a0records 256 levels of brightness,\u00a0and\u00a0raw\u00a0records\u00a0between 4,096 to 16,384 levels!\u00a0This is described with the term \u201cbit\u201d.\u00a0JPEG\u00a0captures in 8bit, and\u00a0raw is either 12-bit or 14-bit.<\/p>\n<p>You may get a dramatically over or under exposed\u00a0image.\u00a0With\u00a0raw,\u00a0you have additional information in the file, making it much easier to correct the image without a drastic reduction in quality. You can also recover more burned-out highlights and clipped shadows.\u00a0Great white balance and color are essential to an awesome image, and shooting\u00a0raw lets you make the adjustments easier and faster, with better\u00a0results.<\/p>\n<p>When you make adjustments to a\u00a0raw\u00a0file, you\u2019re not actually changing the original data.\u00a0What you are doing is creating a set of instructions for how the\u00a0JPEG\u00a0or\u00a0TIFF\u00a0version should be\u00a0saved.\u00a0The advantage of this is that you don\u2019t have to worry about ruining an image, accidentally saving over, or being unable to go back and make changes.<\/p>\n<p>Because of the finer gradation of tones and colors you\u2019ll get better prints from\u00a0raw\u00a0files.\u00a0There are, however, some \u201cyes, buts\u201d to using raw and we\u2019ll discuss those next week.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week we\u2019ll try to take some of the mystery out of using the raw format.\u00a0 The following information is based on a page by Rob Lim on a website named\u00a0photographyconcentrate.com.
