FINDLAY — Sparked by a big first half scoring run, Van Wert rolled to a 58-40 Division II sectional semifinal win over Maumee at Findlay High School on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n

The victory means the Cougars (12-10) will play Bath (9-14) for the lower bracket sectional championship at 8 p.m. Friday night at Findlay. Bath defeated Kenton 64-58.\u00a0Pre-sale tickets for the sectional title game are on sale in the athletic office today during normal school hours and Friday until 3 p.m. The cost is $6 for adults and $4 for students.<\/p>\n

\"\"The Panthers took a 6-4 lead halfway through the first quarter, but the Cougars went on a 19-2 run that lasted into the second period. Nate Place hit two foul shots and a layup, then Owen Treece drained back-to-back treys to give Van Wert a 14-6 lead at the end of the quarter.<\/p>\n

After Treece drilled another triple to open second quarter scoring, Maumee\u2019s David Walker connected from the floor, but the Cougars responded with two baskets by Drew Bagley and one by Jacoby Kelly that gave Van Wert a 23-8 advantage. After a pair of Panther baskets, Bagley hit a bucket and a trey and the Cougars went on to enjoy a 32-18 halftime lead.<\/p>\n

Maumee\u2019s Ben Pacer opened the third quarter with a trey, but Place answered with a triple. The 6-2 junior went on to score nine consecutive points and boosted Van Wert to a 41-26 lead with 2:30 left in the period. He went on to finish with a game high 21 points, while Bagley finished with 15 and Treece, 11.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur guys took care of business tonight with great balance,\u201d Van Wert head coach Mark Bagley said. \u201cSurvive and advance to play for a sectional title on Friday.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Cougars began the fourth quarter with a comfortable 45-32 lead were able to pull away even more using free throws late in the period.<\/p>\n

Van Wert finished 20 of 47 from the floor (43 percent), 13 of 19 (69 percent) from the foul line and finished with 23 rebounds and nine turnovers. Maumee was 16 of 54 (30 percent) shooting, two of five (40 percent) from the free throw line and had 27 rebounds and 12 turnovers.
