{"id":99429,"date":"2018-03-03T08:46:50","date_gmt":"2018-03-03T13:46:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=99429"},"modified":"2018-03-03T08:46:50","modified_gmt":"2018-03-03T13:46:50","slug":"latta-seeks-opioid-enforcement-answers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2018\/03\/03\/latta-seeks-opioid-enforcement-answers\/","title":{"rendered":"Latta seeks opioid enforcement answers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Submitted information<\/em><\/p>\n<p>WASHINGTON, D.C. &#8212;\u00a0At an Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health hearing,\u00a0U.S. Representative Bob Latta (R-Bowling Green) questioned an official from the Drug\u00a0Enforcement\u00a0Agency (DEA) about law enforcement efforts to combat the opioid epidemic and coordination between the agency and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).<\/p>\n<p>The hearing, entitled\u00a0\u201cCombatting the Opioid Crisis: Helping Communities Balance Enforcement and Patient Safety,\u201d\u00a0focused on finding solutions to the epidemic that is prevalent in communities across the country. The hearing kicks off a push by the Energy and Commerce Committee to pass legislation addressing the opioid crisis in the coming months. Latta has\u00a0introduced the INFO Act, legislation that would improve the collection and availability of data relating to opioids.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe opioid epidemic has hit Ohio hard and overdoses across the state continue to rise,\u201d said Latta. \u201cFinding solutions needs to be a priority here in Congress, and that\u2019s\u00a0why it\u2019s so important that the Energy and Commerce Committee is beginning a full-court press to get legislation to the President\u2019s desk to curb the abuse of opioids, treat those that are addicted to drugs, and hold accountable those that bring illicit drugs into our communities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today, we\u00a0heard valuable\u00a0testimony\u00a0that will be essential as we try to improve coordination between federal agencies, state, and local governments, law enforcement, health care professionals, and advocates,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Latta led off his questions to DEA Deputy Assistant Attorney Susan Gibson from the agency\u2019s\u00a0Diversion Control Division by asking about DEA\u2019s coordination with HHS and followed up by asking about what DEA is doing to stop the importation of fentanyl.
