{"id":99995,"date":"2018-03-19T08:21:55","date_gmt":"2018-03-19T13:21:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=99995"},"modified":"2018-03-20T07:39:35","modified_gmt":"2018-03-20T12:39:35","slug":"vw-red-cross-event-teaches-kids-to-prepare-for-disaster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2018\/03\/19\/vw-red-cross-event-teaches-kids-to-prepare-for-disaster\/","title":{"rendered":"Red Cross event all about preparedness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>DAVE MOSIER\/<\/strong><em>independent editor<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The local chapter of the American Red Cross was at Lee Kinstle\u2019s GM Sales &amp; Service on Saturday in order to provide a number of preparedness activities in celebration of Red Cross Month in March.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_99996\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-99996\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-99996\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Red-Cross-preparedness-event-3-17-18-hands-on-CPR.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"234\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-99996\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Red Cross chief certifier Gene Border teaches local children &#8220;hands only&#8221; CPR during Saturday&#8217;s Red Cross preparedness event held to celebrate Red Cross Month in March.<\/strong> <em>Dave Mosier\/Van Wert independent<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Derek Stemen, executive director for the area chapter, which operates in Allen, Auglaize, Hancock, Hardin, Putnam, and Van Wert counties, said Saturday that, while the weather wasn\u2019t great on Saturday, the event brought out a nice turnout of local children and their parents to learn \u201chands only\u201d CPR, get their faces painted, and find out about a number of other Red Cross activities and functions.<\/p>\n<p>Gene Border, who certifies in all six chapter counties for CPR, first aid, and the use of AED defibrillators, while also teaching youths ages 11-15 how to be babysitters and basic life support, was on hand to provide instruction to local children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEver since 1943, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued as Red Cross Month in honor of our volunteers and all they do,\u201d Stemen said. \u201cSo we said what a great time to come together with all our volunteers and do a preparedness event for the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to \u201chands only\u201d CPR, kids had the opportunity to learn about tornado and fire safety and to make cards for members of the military.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->\u201cIt was really just kind of an overview and introducing the community to all the great things we do in the community, including disaster relief with the fire department and many of our great first responders in the community,\u201d Stemen said.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the children\u2019s events, the Red Cross also held a 5K run in the snow and chilly weather prior to kick off Saturday\u2019s preparedness event.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DAVE MOSIER\/independent editor The local chapter of the American Red Cross was at Lee Kinstle\u2019s GM Sales &amp; Service on Saturday in order to provide a number of preparedness activities in celebration of Red Cross Month in March.
