Stalking the wild Leprechaun

Kindergarteners at Lincolnview Elementary worked hard to set a leprechaun trap for this St. Patrick's Day. They returned to school this week only to find that the leprechaun had shrunk the hats they made, took their pennies, and left surprises for them! However hard they tried, the elusive leprechaun got away again this year. Pictured setting up traps (from left): Jack Snyder, Dalton Keysor. (Photo submitted.)

Leprechauns are Irish fairies about two feet tall. Leprechauns are dressed in green and are shoemakers. They can be found by following the sound of their hammering. Leprechauns are sly creatures, and will try to trick you. But in spite of all of that, Lincolnview kindergarteners still try to trap the elusive leprechaun, and each year they fall victim to the leprechaun’s mischief. This year was no different. Children talk about it for weeks, wondering what things the leprechaun will do when he visits. As everyone knows, leprechauns hoard pots of gold, and if caught, must reveal the treasure’s location to their captor. Usually, the student who tries to capture a leprechaun is stopped in the end, made to look away by some distraction while the leprechaun escapes. Kindergarteners worked hard on different types of traps this year in hopes of capturing their first leprechaun, trying to customize their traps to make something unique; because, leprechauns, as we all know, won’t be fooled by the same trap twice!
